"Thanks to Sampath Bank's support, we can now cultivate our lands during both Yala and Maha seasons."
Testimonial - " Wewata Jeewayak " Programme

The Dunuwaththegama Tank in our Horowpathana area had deteriorated to an alarming state, severely impacting our farming community. During both Yala and Maha cultivation seasons, the overflowing tank made it impossible for us to properly manage our agricultural activities.

In 2024, Sampath Bank stepped forward through their 'Wewata Jeewayak' programme to address this critical issue. Their initiative to restore the tank bund has been transformative for our farming families. Without this timely intervention, our community would have faced severe consequences during the rainy season, including potential damage to our lands, properties and possible risks to human lives.

Thanks to Sampath Bank's support, we can now cultivate our lands during both Yala and Maha seasons. This restoration project has supported our entire village's agricultural activities. We are deeply grateful to Sampath Bank for this initiative and their commitment to our community's well-being.

SUCCESS STORY – RATHMALE VILLAGE TRANSFORMATION STORY

The Bank embarked on an ambitious initiative to transform the Rathmale village into a model for sustainable agriculture through mushroom cultivation. Following the successful restoration of the Rathmale Tank, we identified a unique opportunity to revitalise the community's previous experience with mushroom cultivation, which had been disrupted during the pandemic. Our initiative led to the establishment of the 'Punarjeewa Farmers Association' - the first of its kind in Kurunegala District - comprising 32 members, predominantly women (85%).

Through strategic interventions, we:

  • Provided seed funding for mushroom cultivation.
  • Delivered financial literacy training, implementing a structured savings programme.
  • Facilitated technical training through the Mushroom Development and Training Centre.
  • Introduced value-added product development to combat market price fluctuations.
  • Initiated direct supply chain development to ensure fair pricing.
  • We are currently finalising negotiations to establish direct market linkages, which will ensure fair pricing and sustainable income for the farmers. The Rathmale village transformation serves as a testament to our Bank's commitment to rural development and financial inclusion.

Facilitated Training Sessions on Efficient Water Management Under the 'Wewata Jeewayak' Tank Restoration Programme

As part of Sampath Bank’s flagship sustainability initiative 'Wewata Jeewayak', training sessions on efficient water management were conducted in the Kurunegala District. These sessions targeted officials from the Department of Agrarian Development and members of farmers' associations connected to the six restored tanks in the region.

The training focused on sophisticated irrigation methods that helped farmers grow more food while using water more efficiently and fairly. These climate-smart farming practices allowed participants to produce enough crops both to feed their families and to sell at market, improving rural living standards. This approach complements the Bank's wider goals of fostering business growth and ensuring communities have reliable access to food and economic opportunities.

Facilitated the 57th National Aluth Sahal Mangalyaya

Sampath Bank supported the 57th National Aluth Sahal Mangalyaya organised by the Department of Agrarian Development. The sponsorship strengthens the Bank's ongoing partnership in the 'Wewata Jeewayak' Tank Restoration Programme. During this traditional ceremony, farmers present their first harvest as an offering to the sacred Sri Maha Bodhi in Anuradhapura. The ritual preserves Sri Lanka's agricultural heritage while seeking blessings for the farming community.

BUSINESS PARTNERS
Strengthening Supplier Relations

The Bank is committed to build and maintain strong supplier relationships with its suppliers. To strengthen these ties and understand the supplier’s business models, the Bank’s procurement team introduced mandatory face-to-face meetings as part of the supplier on-boarding process for all new suppliers starting in 2020. Routine meetings are held throughout the year to foster collaboration, identify risks and opportunities, and provide any improvements and align with the Bank’s requirements.

Integrating Sustainable Practices Across Operations

As part of its ongoing efforts to encourage suppliers to enhance their sustainability practices, the Bank introduced a new supplier rating mechanism. It aims to further strengthen the due diligence processes, provide a holistic evaluation of suppliers from Environmental, Social, and Governance perspectives at the point of initial registration. The purpose of the rating system is to rank suppliers based on their track record in order to fulfilment and adherence to the agreed terms and conditions. Supplier due diligence activities were conducted under the oversight of the Bank’s Environmentalist to ensure suppliers' compliance with the Bank’s ESG practices. Additionally, advisory services were provided as needed to assist suppliers in enhancing their ESG credentials.

Supplier Evaluation Model

The supplier evaluation model consists of six criteria that must be met before progressing to the supplier registration stage. These criteria include Risk assessment, ESG assessment, Quality, Logistics mechanism, Commercial viability and Innovation. Once registered, the Bank implements standard supply management processes, including quality management, risk management, and performance management, to ensure suppliers consistently meet required standards. Suppliers are regularly assessed based on their performance, adherence to contract terms, and ability to mitigate risks, ensuring long-term, reliable partnerships aligned with the Bank’s objectives.

Agency Banking

The Bank leverages the Dialog merchant network to expand its customer touchpoints, with agents screened through Dialog's network. At the start of the year, there were 1,339 agents; some exited and were replaced with new agents, bringing the total to 1,252 by year-end. These agents work to reach new market segments or are situated in places where the Bank does not have a physical presence.

Sampath Bank provides the training curriculum in which Dialog is responsible for training and educating the agents. The Bank also ensures that regulatory approval is obtained for each agent following a thorough due diligence process conducted by the branches. To maintain standards and for continuous improvements the Bank closely tracks and evaluates the performance of its agents.

Correspondent Banking

As the country’s economic stability improved, confidence from international financial institutions grew. This led to more correspondent banks approaching to re-establish trade lines, facilitating smoother trade transactions and access to more trade financing activities.
